PSJS 250: Social Change through Service
FINAL PRESENTATION (20%)
On Thursday, April 23rd at 7:00pm we will hold a Zoom meeting with the class to share what was learned in the class. Each student will give a 10 minute report on their Social Story or New Seeds Curriculum final assignments. They should also include a summary of their primary learning from the class as described in Reflection #6.
Pick one of the two Assignments:
Coronavirus Social Story (worth 20%) - Due Friday, April 17th. Draft due Mon., April 13th
Create a social story on the Coronavirus for the children you worked with that explains what the Coronavirus is, why they need to practice social distancing, how to stay healthy, and any other information you think your 1st and 2nd graders would find helpful. You should also incorporate resiliency principles into this story which will make it unique from other social stories that have been created for children. For example, you will talk about the Coronavirus as the "problem", but to solve it, here are the recommendations the government and our county is providing. Another example is incorporating how the reader and their peers may be feeling about it.
Please use simple text and incorporate photos or illustrations. I have provided links to a few examples on the On-line Learning page for you to refer to, but if you use any of their photos, you'll need to reference it in the end. While you can use these books as a guide, yours should be your own and again include resliency principles and can also reference the school or our community (Rochester). The book should be in color with a title page. There should be no typos or errors. Send me your story through the drop box below in a Word document format.
I will forward your books to RCSD #57 and Urban Choice Charter School teachers who will forward it to your Seeds kids! Jennifer and Brittany are thrilled with the idea and looking forward to receiving them. We are moving the deadline for this project up so the books can be relevant and timely. It is due Easter break week, but by Monday the 13th at the latest.

New Seeds of Success Curriculum (worth 20%) - Due Friday, April 17th. Draft due Mon., April 13th
Most of the Seeds activities have been successful, but I’d like to enhance the uniqueness of the program by adding uniquely created curriculum created by you, the students who have implemented the program. The assignment is to develop one unique activity for each of the 5 resiliency principles that are developmentally appropriate for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th grade. The activities should enable the students to better understand or apply the principles and they should relate to one or more of the Seeds books. These activities should *not be pulled from the internet, books, activities you've done before, etc. They need to be uniquely created by you.
Submit the following, one per page:
NOTE: As we discussed, one way I may strengthen the Seeds of Success program is to change the order of the curriculum and tie it more specifically to the children’s needs. A possible order is: 1) Problem-Solving, 2) Goal Setting, 3) Feelings, 4) Empathy, 5) Persistence. Students can be asked to identify a challenge they are facing (and their strengths), create a goal to overcome that challenge, understand their feelings about it, and the feelings of others (empathy), and then understand the importance of persisting and developing strategies for doing so. While not required, consider activities that follow this order and help children to tie the principles to their own lives.
