PSJS 250: Social Change through Service
It is due Easter break week, but by Monday the 13th at the latest. Hello class! Welcome to the new schedule for the remaining 5 weeks of class. We are in the middle of challenging times and the impact is significant for all of us individually and for our communities. I am with you and thinking of you all as we remain in our homes and try to continue on with our lives as best as we can. I have developed a schedule that includes both some "class time" and "HW" out of class work that will help us accomplish the rest of the course goals in a way that feels doable. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if your personal situation changes because of illness to your family or yourself that would impact your ability to do this work. In addition to the course-specific assignments, I would like to build in some time just to touch base and support each other where needed. Also, I'm new to the technology we'll be using, and I know it's new to some of you as well, so we'll need to be patient. Please let me know if you're struggling with using any of this technology or the work and we'll find different approaches. Trust that we'll get through this! In addition, know that the Seeds kids are home and perhaps are using some of your lessons on resiliency as we speak! Last, eat healthy, get outside every day, connect with your family and friends, and use the resources you have to stay well.
Dr. Donahue

Please respond to the following questions by Friday March 27th and respond to at least 2 of your classmates regarding their comments.
- Tiffany Jana makes the point that sometimes people can be so focused on the privilege they don’t have, that they miss the privilege that is available to them; and similarly, that those with privilege are often blinded to the fact that they have privilege, especially if they don’t need to see it to survive. She asks the following questions: “What are you missing that’s right in front of you? What part of your frame do you need to change to really see?" Answer these questions:
- How has your privilege or lack of privilege blinded you?
- What frame can you change to see things you didn't notice before about privilege?" You can use the list by Peggy McIntosh we reviewed briefly in class here to consider options: http://crc-global.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/white-privilege.pdf.
- How might you use your privilege for good?
- Then address these questions:
- How do you think the Coronavirus crisis disproportionately affecting some people more than others?
- What groups (who may not have privilege) are being more negatively affected than others? Why and/or How? If you can, cite some examples from the news media, but you can cite person examples as well. This is not a research question per se, but search for some examples of this from news sources.

Discussion Questions during class time:
- Chimamanda Adichie in The Danger of a Single Story says “our lives, our cultures, are composed of many overlapping stories”. What does it mean to have a “Single Story” according to Chimamanda using the examples she gives of when a single story narrative is used? What are the dangers of using a single story perspective (e.g. regarding power, regarding perspective, etc.)? Please elaborate.
- Please answer these question: When have you used a single story narrative to make sense of a situation? How have you or how could you change that story by integrating a more complex understanding of that situation?
Watch the You Tube Video:
The Wealth of the Poor: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=80&v=SLZNusYeauw&feature=emb_logo
Reflection #5 Questions (please submit on Blackboard under the Assignments tab).
- In the Wealth of the Poor (chapter reading under Course Resources), the author Larry James talks about the negative consequences of charity. What are some of these? As a result of this insight, what was his “better form of charity” instead of his church’s traditional Christmas give-away?
- What is a new paradigm and principle of community development that he posed? What is Upstream Thinking?
- Did your community-engaged learning work through the Seeds program feel like a “better form of charity”? How has it used principles of Upstream Thinking?

1.What are their overarching goals and framework?
2.How do they address the root causes and/or impact of poverty (ex. trauma, low educational outcomes, institutional racism, privilege)?
3.How might they address the challenges your Seeds’ kids faced? - Please find one other program in Rochester that also addresses poverty, low educational outcomes, and/or trauma in children and review how they address these challenges and if they seem to use an asset-based perspective.
Thursday, April 23rd, 7:00
